The Snow Came - And Birds Too

Yes, the snowstorm hit today. We have 7 inches of snow and sleet on top of that. As I write this it is sleeting heavily. I have found that it isn't easy to take pictures in a snowstorm. Sometimes those flakes just get in the way of the shot - as with the above Dark eyed Junco. But I liked how he blended in so well with the trees and the snow.
The birds were out in full force at the feeders. I had 30 birds at one time in the trees and the feeders outside on the deck.
I have really been trying to enjoy the seasons as they come - and not wish my time away, however, I REALLY want Spring to come. Early would be good!
Hope you all have a Safe and Happy Weekend!

  1. Love your pictures!! We are not getting snow here today but we've also had lots of birds at the feeders. We put out shelled peanuts and the bluejays have enjoyed them!

  4. Wow! Great pics, found your sight through a friend that now lives in Blacksburg. We don't get much snow here in Arkansas but we did two years ago and the birds went crazy! Fun to watch! I love your work!

  8. Love your pictures of the blue jay and the junco. I know that the flakes can be challenging, but I think the falling snow adds to a picture. Hoping we'll have a little snow here tomorrow.

  10. How beautiful these photos are! I especially love the little flecks of icy snow on the blue jay's beak. You take such AMAZING photos, Kerri! :) I am sorry to hear the weather is bad, but I am glad you and yours are safe. The storm is going to bypass us in New England, I think.
    Have a great night...Theresa

  14. Wow - That second shot is gorgeous!
    Really like that one!

With so many birds flying south for the winter, we don't get much of a selection here. I hate to say I am getting tired of the same ones - I must have a gazillion photos of downey and hairy woodpeckers. I feel bad - all I am photographing are sleeping trees with snow covered cornfields. Not much variety - I think I have hit the doldrums of winter in the North east.

  19. Kerri, lovely snowbird shots! Sometimes the falling snowflakes cover important parts of the photograph but when they don't they can really enhance the mood of the pic. This is a great catch of the bluejay, nice pose & excellent background.

  20. This are great photos! I don't think the snow got in the way at all - if anything I think it adds to the effect. I can hear the silence of snowfall! (my favorite sound. :o))
