A Little bit Messy

It was quite thrilling for me to get so close to this little Downy Woodpecker who is a frequent visitor to our deck. I slowly approached and he didn't seem to be bothered by me at all and continued pecking on the seed bar. As you can see, he was a bit of a messy eater and has seed all over his beak. If you look closely you can see just a bit of his tongue sticking out too. And I LOVE that little out of place feather on top of his head.
Hope you all have a Terrific Tuesday!

  1. That is a great shot! I haven't seen my woodpeckers in a while. Hopefully they are nesting over in the woods and will be back soon with little downeys.

  2. This is my first glimpse of the Downy Woodpecker. Marvelous.

You are a passionate observer. A messy eater, his tongue and the feather out of place....we miss so much if we fail to passionately observe.

    I'm learning.

    This is my favorite photo.

    Thanks for sharing!

  4. His momma didn't teach him any table manners. Poor thing. Getting the job done filling his tummy, though.

  5. Hey, if you had to stick your tongue through a cage to get food you might be a little messy and have a bad hair day too! This is nothing short of fabulous. Your photos continue to amaze me.

  6. Wonderful photo, Kerri. We have a suet feeder close to the walk that leads to my husband's woodworking shop and the local downy male lets him get quite close too. I think they know he's the one feeding him. :)

  10. Wow~what a beautiful shot! When I lived in Michigan I would feed all types of birds, my faves were the Chikadees~they would land on my shoulder waiting for me to fill up their stations~ so cool!

  12. He's a beauty. They seem to be a bit bolder than most other birds around here.. except for the chickadees. They're always the first to check things out. As always, you amaze me with your fine, clear shots.
