It was quite thrilling for me to get so close to this little Downy Woodpecker who is a frequent visitor to our deck. I slowly approached and he didn't seem to be bothered by me at all and continued pecking on the seed bar. As you can see, he was a bit of a messy eater and has seed all over his beak. If you look closely you can see just a bit of his tongue sticking out too. And I LOVE that little out of place feather on top of his head. Hope you all have a Terrific Tuesday!
That is a great shot! I haven't seen my woodpeckers in a while. Hopefully they are nesting over in the woods and will be back soon with little downeys.
ReplyDeleteThis is my first glimpse of the Downy Woodpecker. Marvelous.
ReplyDeleteYou are a passionate observer. A messy eater, his tongue and the feather out of place....we miss so much if we fail to passionately observe.
I'm learning.
This is my favorite photo.
Thanks for sharing!
What a terrific shot. He really looks likes he is enjoying his dinner!
ReplyDeleteHis momma didn't teach him any table manners. Poor thing. Getting the job done filling his tummy, though.
ReplyDeleteHey, if you had to stick your tongue through a cage to get food you might be a little messy and have a bad hair day too! This is nothing short of fabulous. Your photos continue to amaze me.
ReplyDeleteWonderful photo, Kerri. We have a suet feeder close to the walk that leads to my husband's woodworking shop and the local downy male lets him get quite close too. I think they know he's the one feeding him. :)
ReplyDeleteLove this !!!
ReplyDeleteI have one who visits my suets. I look from my windows. Haven't been able to get a nice shot like you did.
He looks like a kid caught raiding the cookie box! So cute!
ReplyDeleteWow great :)) He's really enjoying his dinner !!
ReplyDeleteWow~what a beautiful shot! When I lived in Michigan I would feed all types of birds, my faves were the Chikadees~they would land on my shoulder waiting for me to fill up their stations~ so cool!

He is beautiful! And, he obviously enjoys his food!!
ReplyDeleteHe's a beauty. They seem to be a bit bolder than most other birds around here.. except for the chickadees. They're always the first to check things out. As always, you amaze me with your fine, clear shots.
ReplyDeleteOur downies wait on an adjacent tree as I fill up the feeder or replace the suet. Nice photo.
ReplyDeleteGreat image! I love the way they get the suet all over when they eat. They really get into it.
ReplyDeleteSuch great detail -
ReplyDeleteI especially love the little white dots around the eye!
So clear!
Very well done! Beautiful!
HI Kerri,
ReplyDeleteHe is so cute with its feather out of place as you said!!!! You got a very good picture! That's your smallest woodpecker species right?
What a cracker... I have a picture on Paintbox you might like Kerri..
ReplyDeleteLooks like one of the grumpy old men, only more colorful:)
ReplyDelete(of course, younger too!)
This guy might be a messy eater but he has a lot of personality! A keeper!
ReplyDeleteHow exciting! You took good advantage of the moment in capturing this shot. Well done!
ReplyDeleteWhat an excellent picture! all that detail which can be seen so close up.Thanks.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,Ruth
I haven't visited you for a while, went back and looked at your last posts - beautiful. I do love the little downy woodpecker, I agree with you about the little feather - cute! Diane
ReplyDeleteCatching up today Kerri!
ReplyDeleteI love this shot of the Downy and that you can see his little tongue! BRAVO!
Hopefully they are nesting over in the woods and will be back soon with little downeys.
