Monarch Butterfly laying an egg - ovipositing - on the underside of a milkweed leaf.

Cropped closely - but I hope you can see the little egg it laid. It was quite thrilling to see this happening. Only when I got the image downloaded did I realize I captured the egg as well.

ReplyDeleteLike the monarch, I have been hovering around your blog and just had to comment on this. Beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI discovered Monarch eggs on milkweed just yesterday afternoon. I've not planted milkweed, but, they are in the fields around me and one popped up this summer where it shouldn't be (of course). I left it, knowing its importance to the survival of Monarchs. I was so excited to see the eggs. Your pictures are wonderful - so glad you captured the moments of egg laying. This should be the generation that makes the long journey to Mexico to overwinter.
Wow, fantastic! How fortunate you were to see the egg laying. I too recently saw a butterfly (spicebush) hovering atop a leaf and then depositing an egg. I've never seen such a thing before. Very exciting! Wonderful quote to go along with these beautiful images, Kerri!
